Will looked up sharply as he heard his name being called from further upstream. He heaved another bag of grain onto the grindstone, assured Eldred that he’d be back shortly, and jumped down to the ground from the platform alongside the mill wheel.

Will ran over to where Selwyn stood, red-faced, sweating and out of breath. His horse was wandering aimlessly between the huts in search of pasture.

‘What is it?’ Will asked nervously.

Selwyn quickly explained what had happened at Rochester Castle.

‘What does Guillaume think I can achieve?’ Will demanded.

‘I’ve no idea, Will, but you may be the only hope of preserving my mother’s life. William has a foul temper when annoyed, and I fear that he’ll have her tortured for his own amusement.’

Will looked back at the mill, whose wheel had ceased turning. ‘I can leave Deman in charge of the local fyrd. Do you think you could help Father with the mill in my absence?’

‘Willingly, Will — just go, please!’
